News

Studio Restaurant and Bar to Open ; in Brief

CLEETHORPES bar and restaurant The Studio is due to open on November 13. As reported, the original opening night was delayed due to gas problems.

Kevin's Taking On Store Goliaths ; Innovative Newsagent Launches a Home Delivery Service

THE ultimate in convenience shopping has arrived in Cleethorpes - potentially creating three new jobs. For the best part of two decades, Kevin Broughton has served the residents of the resort from his newsagents - and now he is rolling out a doorstep delivery service.

Nhs Is Beyond Reproach ; Viewpoint

THE National Health Service is frequently under attack for its shortcomings and failures. I find this difficult to understand as recently I have had to spend nine days in the coronary care unit at Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital, before being transferred to the Castle hill Hospital in Cottingham.

Sad Closure ; Viewpoint

THE closure of the Halifax bank on Freeman Street is bad for the residents in the area and I hope the building doesn't end up being empty and unused, like many down what is basically a ghost street with many shops closed. The street needs a big investment to bring back people and to call the street a shopping centre again.

Hunt for Searchlight Sites ; Viewpoint

I AM searching all known Second World War searchlight sites in the Lincolnshire area, especially in the Grimsby area. I am attempting to compile all the known sites which were scattered around the countryside.

'Why Do We Let Yobs See the Police Coming?'

AS a retired police officer, I am saddened to continually see on television, hear on local radio, and read both in the national press and our own revered Grimsby Telegraph of what appears to be a steep descent into anarchy. One only has to refer to recent items in the Telegraph to get the message (eg anti-social behaviour, October 16, the women jailed for the brutal attack caught on CCTV, October 20).

Troy Is an Inspiration to Us All ; Viewpoint

I AM writing on behalf of the Meningitis Trust in response to your story about Troy Hutchinson, a former Healing School pupil who won his battle with meningitis and has achieved excellent success in his GCSEs and, even though he has lost some fingers on his left hand, has learned to play the guitar. Troy's story provides inspiration to us all, but particularly to those who have experienced meningitis.

Swine Flu Vaccine Issued As Fears Grow for Winter ; Health Chiefs Predict Bug Will Make It 'Most Difficult Season' in Nhs History

THE first people in North East Lincolnshire have received their vaccination against swine flu - in preparation for what the NHS fear could be "the most difficult winter" in its history. As reported, health bosses estimate that in a population of 100,000 people - similar to that of North East Lincolnshire - there will be 11,000 clinical cases of influenza-type illness in the peak week of a pandemic, with 440 of these people likely to require hospitalisation.

You Spot It Was a Dominoes Side ; Bygones: Keeping It Local

AFTER we published a photograph of what we were told showed members of the darts team from the No2 Refreshment Room, readers got in touch to tell us that it was actually the dominoes team. Mike Corby got in touch to put names to most of the faces, and told us that the photograph was taken in 1975 when the team won the Summer Cup.

Nothing Good Lasts Forever ; by Peter Chapman Odd Man's Week Accuracy

AS A rule at this time of year my wife, the dog and I are planning our annual jaunt to a hotel in Yorkshire where we have gone uninterruptedly for 20 years. It appealed to us when we heard that they didn't take children but did welcome dogs.

Tribute to Jam Man George ; by Peter Chapman Odd Man's Week Accuracy

HARRY Tickler, last of the six children of George Tickler, a partner in the once famous Grimsby jam manufacturing firm, has died. He was 92. Harry Mellor Tickler played no part whatsoever in the family business.

Lord's Casino Trip Gamble ; by Peter Chapman Odd Man's Week Accuracy

I HAD hoped to find in the obituary of Sir Ludovic Kennedy, who died last week at 89, a famous story and linked to it, a name familiar to all of us in our corner of Lincolnshire. The story goes like this... In his final year at Eton, Kennedy, with four friends, chartered a two-engined Popjoy aeroplane to fly to Le Touquet, have a go in the casino, and then get back in time for the 6.30am school roll call without being missed.

We Should Mind Our Language ; by Peter Chapman Odd Man's Week Accuracy

IT STARTED about two years ago. And it's still going on. People on the wireless are revising the language, telling us how to be clever. It all began with 'impasse', a hitherto uncomplicated word until someone decided it was 'ampass'.
