Chad Varah was born in Barton-Upon-Humber on November 12, 1911 and went on to set up the Samaritans charity. Dr Varah set up the helpline service in 1953 as a way of assisting people who felt they had nowhere else to turn.
His inspiration came from conducting the funeral of a 14-year- old girl at St Peter's Church in Barton some years earlier, while he was a young assistant curate.See the full content of this document

He went on to dedicate his life to listening to the problems of people struggling to cope on their own, until his death in 2007.
