Falls Service for Older People Hailed a Success

Summary

A SERVICE to help older people suffering falls in their own homes has been hailed a success after more than a thousand people signed up for help in its first year of operation. The Falls Prevention Service was rolled out across Lincolnshire in May last year in response to recommendations made by Lincolnshire's health scrutiny committee. It was aimed at helping to reduce demand on emergency ambulance services and inappropriate hospital admissions. Since then, the service has helped 1,300 people across the county who have suffered falls or feel they may be at risk of falling.

The service is a joint operation run by NHS Lincolnshire, Lincolnshire County Council, East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) and Age UK co-operative Providing Adult Services And Care Across Lincolnshire (Pascal). Four case workers work across Lincolnshire visiting clients in their homes to offer advice and carry out "fall prevention checks" to help clients minimise risk and feel safer. Bev Manson works for Pascal in Lincolnshire and says the service is open to anyone who is aged over 65, who lives independently in Lincolnshire and is concerned about falling.
