We're not allowed to drive big cars any more, right? I'm sure I read that somewhere and pretty much everyone I know seems to be downsizing, so it must be true. And quite honestly, with petrol around Pounds 1.36 a litre if you're lucky, why would you? So it's micro-minis for me, from now on ... but, hang on, I've just got this new Peugeot in the car park and they're leaving it with me for a week. Shame not to try it out ... I'm sure you understand.

The 508 seems to fly in the face of all the preconceptions I harbour about Peugeots and, in fact, French cars in general. They (Peugeot, Renault, Citroen) do very good small cars - some of the best of a big bunch - but big cars? They don't exactly set the pulses racing, do they? Well this new rival to the Ford Mondeo and Volkswagen Passat could just be the car to trump that particular "truth".
