July 18, 1940: Grimsby had its biggest fire for some time when the greater part of R Marshall and Son''s garage in Garibaldi Street was gutted. The fire started in the fitting shop at the rear of the building and spread with great rapidity, and the whole of the building, which was formerly the Methodist Connexion Chapel, was soon ablaze.

July 18, 1946: For the first time in local history, Grimsby''s 2,500 to 3,000 pontoon and fish house workers would be covered by a general trade union agreement. There would be a basic adult minimum wage of Pounds 5, and a completely new principle in overtime, in that overtime would be paid for Saturday afternoons irrespective of the number of hours worked in the week. Free Saturday afternoons during the football season was also one of the workers' objectives.
