REMAINDERED every year in the big box of Christmas tree decorations are some Victorian, painted-tin, spring-loaded, tiny candle holders. I have never, ever put them on my tree ... nor did my mother or my grandmother. Yet there they are, visible, briefly, every year.

Until this week I had often considered the folly - the danger - of decorating a fast drying Christmas tree with lighted candles. But they must have been used once, or why should I still have a handful? Now I know why and all thanks to an old picture in the Illustrated London News of 1848 showing Albert and Victoria round their tree with candles lighted.
