REMAINDERED every year in the big box of Christmas tree decorations are some Victorian, painted-tin, spring-loaded, tiny candle holders. I have never, ever put them on my tree ... nor did my mother or my grandmother. Yet there they are, visible, briefly, every year.
Until this week I had often considered the folly - the danger - of decorating a fast drying Christmas tree with lighted candles. But they must have been used once, or why should I still have a handful? Now I know why and all thanks to an old picture in the Illustrated London News of 1848 showing Albert and Victoria round their tree with candles lighted.See the full content of this document
