FOR the past 18 months, the future of Swedish carmaker, Saab, has looked almost as bleak as a Trollhattan winter scene. Rumours have abounded as to how General Motors (GM) would handle the necessary sale of its Swedish subsidiary, which, it should be remembered, has also been producing the very poor-selling Saab 9-5-based Cadillac BLS for the past couple of years.

At one stage, even Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone was said to be brokering a rescue deal for the firm. Yet in an intriguing three-way deal, which will witness GM reducing its stake in Saab over coming years, funding is coming from the Swedish government and Dutch specialist, Spyker Cars, in a bid that is being welcomed by all participants.
