Every now and again you can rely on Renault to produce a car out of left field. The general reaction when you see them is that they will never work in the UK market. But you know what? The result is a breath of fresh air in an industry where uniformity and fear of failure is the name of the game.

Twice in the 1990s it went out on a limb - first with the mpv- based 2+2 Avantine and then, in a bid to reintroduce a luxury car to their range, the Val Satis. They were both idiosyncratic and weird looking. And both sank without trace over here - I only ever saw one of each driven by anyone other than a motoring journalist.
